How to Care for a Silk Shirt

It offers the most controlled way to preserve the depth of a solid colour, the precision of a Signature print and the natural fall of the twill. When leaving the garment with a specialist cleaner, mention that it is silk twill. For a Signature piece, specify that the silk is printed.

Silk often needs less cleaning than we imagine. After wearing, place the shirt on a suitable hanger and allow it to air naturally for several hours before returning it to the wardrobe. Perfume, deodorant and skincare should be applied before dressing and left to dry completely. If liquid reaches the fabric, absorb it gently with a clean, dry cloth. Never rub or wring silk.

Some silk garments can be washed by hand, but Maison Kargani recommends professional dry cleaning only for its silk shirts to preserve colour, print, drape and finish.

A light steam is usually enough. Keep the steamer slightly away from the surface and use a low setting, allowing the fabric to relax naturally. If an iron is necessary, use a low silk setting from the reverse side with a fine cotton cloth between the iron and the garment. Avoid spraying water directly onto silk, as droplets can leave marks.

Use a wide wooden or padded hanger that follows the natural line of the shoulders. Give the shirt enough room to fall freely and keep it away from direct sunlight. For longer storage, a breathable cotton garment cover is preferable to plastic. Silk should be protected, not sealed.

Fold the shirt along its natural construction lines and place tissue paper between layers to reduce friction. Keep it near the top of the suitcase rather than beneath heavier garments. Once you arrive, hang it immediately. Most travel creases will release through gravity and time; those that remain usually need only a light steam.

Care, at its best, is almost invisible: a few considered gestures, very little excess, and enough attention to allow an exceptional material to keep its character over time.
